Alignment & Vinyasa Count of the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series

  • RUMAH yoga Amsterdam 74C Distelweg Amsterdam, NH, 1031 HH Netherlands (map)

A 7-part workshop series designed to gradually explore the entire Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga. Together, we’ll study each posture in detail, understand key alignment principles and body mechanics, and learn the traditional vinyasa count that links breath with movement. This approach will bring both your practice and understanding of Ashtanga Yoga to a whole new level.

What to Expect

These workshops are designed to guide you safely and progressively through the Primary Series. We’ll break down postures step by step, explore their building blocks, and discover where your personal work lies within each group of postures. Bit by bit, you’ll move deeper into the sequence with clarity and awareness.

  • Learn alignment principles in simple poses before applying them to more complex ones.

  • Build a sustainable practice that balances challenge with safety.

  • Develop focus through detail: the more precise your practice, the stronger your concentration.

  • Understand the vinyasa count and how it transforms practice into a moving meditation.

While the material we explore is technical and body-specific, applying it consistently will make your practice refined, sustainable, and transformative—and you will experience the difference on more than just the physical level.

Workshop 1: Surya Namaskara A & B

Exploring movements of shoulders, spine & wrists.

Learn how to do the sun salutations and all the postures of this little sequence, including chaturanga dandasana (often one of the least liked postures in yoga) in a safe way. When done properly it will keep your writs, shoulders and spine safe and supported, plus you will start to build a tone of strength in your body.

This workshop will have you dive into the tiny details of how to make this often overlooked ‘basic warm-up’ your favorite moving meditation daily ritual.

Surya Namaskara is not only the warm-up in Ashatanga yoga, but also plays an integral part of almost all transitions in this yoga method. Learning how to do these movements properly and intelligently will transform your practice and bring about excitement for showing up to your mat daily.

Learning the traditional vinyasa count will be an interactive and fun experience. Come and let’s get to know each other through this workshop.

Workshop 3: Forward Folds, Hips & Knees

The big majority of the primary series is about spinal flexion and forward folding. We will learn the key elements to do these repetitive movement in a safe way, while challenging ourselves in the right places. When done correctly, forward folds have healing effect for our spine as well as our digestive system.

Knees & Hips are big joints, one of the biggest we have in our bodies and we want to keep them safe while we practice. If we don’t know how they work, individually or together and what to be mindful of, we might cause imbalance in the body that could lead to injuries.

Learn about key mechanical principals and anatomy of these 2 joints so you can find the proper work in the body for steady progression while keeping your joints safe.

Workshop 4: Twists & Shoulder Mobility

Doing proper twists comes with understanding the mechanics of several joints and muscle groups. Being someone that twists don’t come easily I had to work hard and in much detail to be able to do them safely. In the process of it I learned quite a few things. In Ashtanga Yoga twists often come in combination with shoulder rotations.

We will explore both movements in the most fun way, revealing some likes and dislikes along the way.

We will cover alignment of poses with lotus element plus possible modifications if ever there is a knee injury, or condition that requires modifications. Learn how to recognize the good sensations and progression in the body and differentiate them from sensations that signal imbalance and red flags in the body, that can be often overlooked.

Workshop 6: Backbends & Second half of Primary Series postures

Backbends when done properly can create a lot of release and at some point actually feel very nice and freeing. Biggest concern I have is that I often hear among students that they think pain or strong / sharp sensations in their back are a part of learning the backbends, while the truth is quite the opposite. When done properly, backbending doesn’t don’t hurt at all.  In this workshop we will explore the mechanics of backbends, hips & shoulder movement  and continue onto second half of primary series postures vinyasa counts and aligment- which include a few balancing poses with straight legs.

Learn the traditional vinyasa count of seated sequence of primary series from Upavista Konasana until Setu Bandhasana.

Workshop 7: Inversions & Closing Sequence

In this workshop we will focus on learning the inversion postures of primary series such as shoulder stand, head stand, upward facing lotus pose, embryo pose..

Closing sequence is a restorative part of Ashtanga Yoga, but before we have been practicing it for a while it might feel far from restorative.

Learn how to approach these postures in a smart way, the key alignment to keep your neck and the rest of your spine safe and finally understand how to get up in that head stand.
